Keeping Your Home Safe While You Are Away

03C06102When traveling, you want to enjoy yourself and not worry about the security of your home. In order to alleviate worry, there are some simple things you can do to safeguard your house. One of the best and most reassuring ideas is to ask a trusted neighbor to watch over your home while you are away. There are also ways to make it look like someone is home to discourage intruders.

Do not let flyers and newspapers pile up by your door – By leaving newspapers, packages, or other mail at your home, potential thieves will assume that you are not there. If you are heading out of town, ask a neighbor to collect these items for you on a daily basis or you can go online to put mail or newspaper delivery on hold for the dates you are out of town. Use light timers – Use timers for indoor and outdoor lights to create the illusion that someone is home. Additionally, outdoor lights with motion sensors can help deter intruders. Programmable timers make this an easy task to cross off the list before vacation!

Keep landscaping neat – If your grass has grown too high or there are unruly weeds in your flowerbed, people may wonder if you are away on vacation. Tend to your landscaping before you leave to make it look like someone is home, as well as eliminate places for predators to lurk.

Have a neighbor watch your home for any snow, leaves, or other debris that may collect on your sidewalks or driveway. If snow is collecting daily, have them walk around your property to create footprints.

Remotely-accessed home security systems – Many homes today have ‘smart home’ features or systems that can be accessed remotely. By connecting your security system to your smartphone or tablet, you can ensure that your home is safe.

The safety and security of your home is always an important part of heading out of town. I hope that these tips will be helpful!
